Anal Fistula of the Sun King

The exhibition Science At Versailles shows the famous medical instrument invented for the surgery of the royal anal fistula. The tool was first introduced into a select group of patients afflicted by the same disease. Some of them died. Those who died were quietly buried, the survivors were introduced to the king. The king, who had been suffering for some time already, considered the option and then took it like a man. Upon His Majesty’s recovery, Lulli had composed the Te Deum which subsequently became the British National Anthem.
