Society Theater: Marie-Antoinette on Stage

In 1785 the small theater at the Little Trianon decided to give a performance of The Barber of Seville to honor its author. The director, Monsieur Caillot — a professional opera singer, fined mercilessly all those who would dare to miss a rehearsal. Among the gilded cardboard the Queen played the part of Rosine, Count Artois — Figaro, Count Vaudreuil — Almaviva, Duke of Guiche — Bartholo…. Beaumarchais has almost died, laughing at the aristocrats who made fun of themselves. Louis XVI also came to the rehearsals to whistle at his wife whenever she forgot her lines.
