Branded with the letters GR, which stand for Garde-Meuble de la Reine, this bed belongs to the Queen. But the small picture hanging above it is that of Jeanne Becu, Countess du Barry, and so gives away its original owner. Madame Campan writes in her Memoires that Marie-Antoinette kept some of Du Barry furniture, specifically the bedroom items. Strange, isn’t it? Of the vanquished opponent wouldn’t those be the first to go? Perhaps in the matter of Antoinette/Du Barry rivalry, to the jealousy of a woman and of the social class adds something we will never be able to define. When Du Barry offered the teen-age Arch-Duchess some diamonds, the latter turned the gift down, saying that she has plenty of those. What if what she wanted wasn’t just the usual valuables, but some other stuff?
