Versailles Vice

Casanova spent a good part of his life trying to convince us that vice has nothing to do with crime. A waste of time, try telling a judge today that all you meant was to have some innocent fun! There were times of course when Louis XIV was required to dispense justice; after all, for the little people the King was often the last station of appeal when a complaint was carried against the highest echelons of nobility. On one occasion the Sun King was confronted by a prostitute who had received a third degree burn because non other than Duke of Orleans, Louis’ younger brother, used the poor girl’s butt as a launch pad to shoot off his fireworks.
