The Emperor’s Underwear

He wore white underwear, which stained easily, that’s why he had to change it daily; he went through hundreds of pairs, because Napoleon ate like pig and wiped his hands as well as ink pen on it; yet trying to live frugally, he would rather wash and fix than buy new ones; so, when the foreign ambassadors came to see him, he would receive them in his old, soiled underwe… Frightening! Nevertheless, this is precisely how it reads in today’s French. All because the word culotte has shifted its meaning, and no longer designates breeches, as it did in the previous centuriesbut women’s underwear, so I could have made him wear panties.
